What are button stays?

Susan's Answer and Hidden Tips

Button stays or button backs are sewn
on the back side sewing through the
outer button. Used on thick or fragile
fabrics, where the constant buttoning and
unbuttoning will eventually cause the
stitching holding the button to wear the
thread thin and the button fall off,
or worse put a hole in the fabric.
I use an 1/8" ruler underneath the
top button as I sew the stay together
with a double threaded needle, 6-7 times,
allowing a gap for thicker fabric layer to
comfortably fit when closed. Topstitching
thread is thicker so use a single thread.
Always knot the single thread cut from
the spool to avoid twisting.
Especially important for the larger one
shank buttons, to keep them upright,
not dangle or pull the fabric.
I do not leave a 1/8" gap for single shank
buttons if the shank already raises them to
allow the over layer.

 Happy Sewing!
